Don’t Let the Outdoors Sting: Allergic Reactions in Cats and Dogs.
Here in the Charleston area we have a number of variables that can contribute to an allergy or allergic reaction in pets. We have stinging and biting insects, toxic plants, and the relentless pollen wave. Pets can come into contact with any of these creatures, both indoors and outdoors, at any time of the day.
Seasonal/ environmental allergies versus an allergic reaction:
Seasonal or environmental allergies are common in South Carolina. Most notable symptoms of seasonal allergies include itching, clear nasal or ocular discharge, hair loss, and skin irritation. These symptoms may occur or worsen at a certain time of year and return after medication is stopped. If you think your pet has seasonal allergies and they are very uncomfortable we are happy to assist in temporary symptom management of allergies. Long term management of seasonal allergies can be done by your primary care veterinarian or by a veterinary dermatologist.
An allergic reaction is an acute (quick onset) set of symptoms such as facial swelling, hives, severe itching, and hives. Symptoms usually happen within minutes to hours of contact with the allergen (insect bite, sting, vaccine, or other) and are dramatic in appearance. Sometimes allergic reactions can progress to a life threatening condition called anaphylaxis which usually only occurs in dogs (very rarely in cats). Anaphylaxis symptoms involve vomiting, diarrhea, collapse, and gallbladder edema.
What happens if my pet has an allergic reaction?
Have your pet evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible for medical treatment. If you suspect that your pet may be having anaphylaxis then seek immediate care at your closest veterinary urgent care or emergency facility. Severe allergic reactions or anaphylaxis may require treatment with steroids, antihistamines, and other medications or IV fluids.
Is there anything I can do at home for my pet if I suspect they are having an allergic reaction?
While you can give Benadryl orally at home, oftentimes an injection of Benadryl acts faster. And in our experience, most dogs benefit from a steroid injection as well.
What can I expect at an urgent care visit for an allergic reaction?
Your pet will be evaluated by a highly trained member of our staff within the first few moments of your arrival. You will be asked what medications your pet takes and their prior medical history. All medical care will be discussed with you prior to administration. Most allergic reactions require a few injections of medication along with medication to go home. Complete discharge instructions will be provided and explained to you before leaving.
How can I tell what my pet had a reaction to?
Most times it is hard to identify the cause of an allergic reaction in a pet, however, sometimes there are obvious signs from a stinger or bite. We will discuss with you how to manage and monitor future allergic reactions at home with your pet.
Please feel free to reach out to us at Island Pet Urgent Care if you have any questions regarding allergies, allergic reactions, or any other urgent veterinary concerns. We are here to help and look forward to meeting you and your pet!
