Meet the Team

  • Dr. Laura Maston graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine in 2011, fulfilling her childhood dream of becoming a small animal veterinarian. Mending stuffed animals’ legs with paper towels became treating injured or ill dogs and cats as she completed two post-graduate internships with a particular focus on emergency and soft tissue surgery. For the past ten years, she has practiced high-quality emergency medicine at 24/7 specialty care hospitals.

Laura has called Johns Island home since 2017 and became co-founder and owner of Island Pet Urgent Care at its inception in 2022. She enjoys many Charleston outdoor activities such as kayaking, fossil hunting, and beachcombing with her adventure poodle, Pepper Jack. She is an avid plant enthusiast and never misses an opportunity for sunporch coffee and birdwatching with one of her five cats on her lap. She dedicates herself to providing the best possible care for animals of the low country.

  • Dr. Odle realized her dream of becoming a veterinarian in 2007 when she graduated from the College of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M University. Starting her career in general practice, she has been practicing emergency medicine in busy specialty and referral centers since 2014. Dr. Odle moved to James Island in 2018 and has seen the demand for veterinary care grow in recent years. She is excited to partner with Dr. Maston to provide urgent care services to the Charleston area and fill a need between routine and emergency care.

A native Texan, Dr. Odle was born and raised outside of Houston. However, she moved with her family to Charleston in 2018 and enjoys all the lowcountry has to offer. In her spare time, you can catch her paddle boarding, enjoying the beach, boating, and cheering on the Texas Aggies in the fall!

 FAQs

  • No appointment is necessary. All pets are treated on a triage basis, meaning the sickest or more injured pets are seen and evaluated first. Stable pets are evaluated in order of arrival. After your pet is deemed stable you may be asked to wait if a critical patient requires the doctor’s attention.

There may be times that patient capacity is reached for the day, especially closer to end of business hours. We encourage phone calls prior to arrival to determine current caseload and planning a visit as soon as you feel your pet requires attention. Our team will make every effort to have your pet evaluated and treated; however, there are times you may be referred to a 24 hour facility.

  • Most illness and injury in pets are not life threatening and can be handled entirely at Island Pet Urgent Care. Some pets have more serious illness or injury, or require ongoing monitoring and care by a veterinarian after hours. In those cases, Island Pet Urgent Care can perform initial diagnostics to help determine the problem and then provide appropriate medical stabilization that could include IV fluids, pain control, antibiotics, or anti-nausea medications. We will then facilitate transfer to a 24-hour facility so your pet can continue to recover under the supervision of a veterinarian.

  • Island Pet Urgent Care will perform minor surgeries such as laceration and bite wound repairs. Surgeries that would involve exploring the chest or abdomen will not be performed at this time.

  • Island Pet Urgent Care accepts most major credit cards, CareCredit and Scratch Pay. We do not accept payment plans; however will work closely with you to provide care while being financially mindful. Estimate of costs are provided with transparency prior to any diagnostics or treatment.

  • Island Pet Urgent Care does not perform routine veterinary care. We are here for urgent illness or injury during hours that your regular veterinarian may be closed or already booked for the day. The relationship with your family veterinarian is a special and important one. We are here to fill the unexpected gaps.

  • Medications your pet needs to heal at home can be filled in our in-house pharmacy at the time of your visit. If preferred, many medications can also be filled via written prescription to outside pharmacies. Chronic medications prescribed through your family veterinarian cannot be filled without a valid veterinary-client-patient-relationship. It is illegal! We encourage any and all refills of medications to be through follow up with your family veterinarian.

  • Medical records are delivered electronically to your designated family veterinarian. This will allow for seamless follow-up if necessary.

  • Island Pet Urgent Care does not accept strays. We may offer assistance with injured wildlife but encourage you to call first with your wildlife concern.
